 | Lowestoft built and engined Sidewinder Trawler, moored in Lowestoft Yacht Marina at the land end of the South Pier.
Open to the public - free of charge!
Built 1962, by Brook Marine, (the boat) and A K Deisels, (the engine) - one of the last fishing boats totally built in Lowestoft.
1962 - 1969 trawled mainly for cod.
1969 - 1991 operated as a rig support vessel (under the name Putford Merlin)
1991 significance to Lowestoft fishing recognised. Converted back as a trawler with upkeep shared equally between the towns of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, both towns having her six months each.

November 2002, a peaceful early morning tow to Great Yarmouth for the winter season - while most of Lowestoft sleeps.
She is seaworthy but prohibitive license and insurance costs means travelling under her own power isn't an option.
Nice profile shot between the St Elmo's Fire lights (left), and the Lifeboat station (right).
In June she returned to Lowestoft - with a mystery bash on one side - and was open to the Lowestoft public once again. I was one of the first visitors. |
A walk round the outside first, this is looking up to the front end.
Take a running jump, son, and leap down into the fish hold, hahaha! What an irresponsible thing to write, he isn't really saying that - well I hope not!!!
That black semicircle thing in front of the bridge house is called the gallows & otter boards, apparently something to do with holding the net while she's fishing.
Plenty of room here for another interesting boat, ideally the Lydia Eva (see the fishing boats page), another historic fishing boat which the Mincarlo charity also owns, but which is still rusting and falling apart in another part of Lowestoft, or the Defender (see the naval vessels page), which I once hoped was going to be opened to the public, but which now looks increasingly unlikely.
