Fishing Memories.
Lowestoft harbour and railway were built in the 1850s. This ability to export the catch raised the town's fishing industry from local to national importance.
These cards from the early Twentieth Century show the fishing industry during it's best years.
They show an idealised view of a terribly hard way of life, but it's a life now vanished but for a few memories and pictures. Compare this page with the one here to see how the fishing industry fares today.
Looking just like an oil painting, the fishing smacks set out for the sea.
Two boats passing the lifeboat - the white one on the right.
In those days this lifeboat's crew supplemented their income by selling trips to paying tourists!!
This one gives an idea of the volume of boats there once was!
So does this one (maybe just a little too exaggerated to believe!).
Early morning or evening red sky? Or just the hand colourer's artistic licence!
Back in port on a misty day. Is that the bridge left of centre?
Walk the plank! (1910)
Two young fishermen, shouldn't like to get in an argument with the one on the left!
